It’s 2016 but with social media we have become more aware of racism with people taking to the Internet to spew their racial hate. It seems people have become more brutal with their racist comments.
And the latest victim of online racist abuse is actress and comedian, Leslie Jones who stars in the new movie Ghost Busters.
Leslie who is part of an ensemble female cast of the new movie became the target of horrible racist comments on twitter after rightwing pundit Milo Yiannopoulos who is a Tech editor, wrote a Ghostbusters review that led to a torrent of racist abuse being directed at Jones on Twitter.
One of the more offensive tweets compared Leslie to a Gorilla! As she struggled to defend herself, someone then set up a fake account in her name and started slinging equally offensive tweets.
For spearheading the racist comments Milo who tweeted under the @nero handle, was permanently banned from Twitter, a move which has prompted the #FreeMilo hashtag which has sparked a lively social media debate over trolling and free speech.
