Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the listening session for Tiwa Savage‘s highly anticipated debut album titled Once Upon A Time. It was a very classy affair which took place at Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, with cocktails starting at 3pm and the event proper kicking off at 5pm.
Read my thoughts on the event and album review after the jump
You know for me it’s always first and foremost about the fashion! LOL! Tiwa looked gorgeous and was working her curves to death in a Mary Katrantzou print blouse and skirt which she teamed with Jimmy Choo strappy sandals. As usual Tiwa is not slacking on her high end designer game! With her hair worn in loose curls, she looked every inch the super star when she walked in to present her labour of love to us.
There are 19 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks on the album. 15 of the 19 songs are brand new never been heard before tracks. With production from Nicki Minaj’s producer OAK, Don Jazzy, Spellz, and a few more. It’s a diverse body of work which features love songs to party songs to conscious songs all written by Tiwa Savage.
The songs I am really feeling so far are:
Wanted – First full length track on the album, produced by Nicki Minaj’s producer Warren “Oak” Felder. It has a dance hall feel and samples
Fela Interlude: A skit which samples Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s Lady. Tiwa gave this track an r & b feel.
Ileke: Very afro pop track, which is dedicated to the ladies, and pretty much shouts out every successful female in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Oh Yeah – produced by Don Jazzy, this song has a funky house feel, and reminds me of Benny Bennasi’s work
Shout Out – a smooth, laid back R & B track with a hip hop infusion by Iceberg Slim & Sarkodie,
Written All Over Your Face – A sexy R & B jam for the grown and sexy, this song is about…ahem…SEX, going down south to be precise LOL
Get Low – A ballad dedicated to her man, Tee Billz. Its a ballad about treating your man like a king and how he’s held her down for so long. Tiwa’s voice takes focal point on this track.
Baby Mo feat Flavour – Classic afro pop/afro beatz jam.
This doesn’t include the other previously released singles I am feeling like Love Me 3X, Ife Wa Gbona & Kele Kele Love
She also premiered the video for Olorun Mi, which was dedicated to the dearly departed & featured haunting images of Goldie, Justus Esiri and victims of the Dana Air Crash.
There are songs that I did not connect with like Eji Ma Fia, Stand As One, Eminado. But this is off just listening to them once, in a room full of people, and bear in mind I am no music critique, I don’t have a technical opinion on production and the like, this is just my opinion as someone that appreciates good music.
I will give it 4/5.
It was such a well put together event. Simple, Sophisticated, Elegance all through. One little thing irked me though, Tiwa had some over enthusiastic bodyguards around her, who were aggressively shoving people out of the way when she was leaving the hall. I guess that’s what you get when you are on superstar levels!
The album drops on June 14th. WIll you be getting it?
