Sad, heartbreaking news coming from the States about a 21 year old Nigerian student who has been gunned down in the driveway of his home, in Dolston, Illinois. Olubusayo Awomolo who was a graduate student of University of Illinois at Chicago, was on his way back from school when he was mercilessly gunned down by unknown men.
Some neighbors said they heard the shooting and at least one saw several men go up to Olubusayo, yet no one called police…seriously?! Busayo’s family home is in a safe, suburban neighbourhood, so a crime like his happening and no one reporting what they saw is nothing short of surprising.
According to his family Olubusayo was extremely focused on his academics, very easy going & quiet. He grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and joined his family in Dolton in December 2002. He made it his mission to attend & finish college after graduating high school.
His older brother found him lying in the driveway of their 15500 block of Ingleside Avenue residence.
“My son said he saw a body and he called 911,” Wale Awomolo said. “He thought it was someone drunk or someone sleeping. Then we found out it was my son. I said, ‘My God.’”
According to Dolton police Chief Bolden Jones, Olubusayo Awomolo was shot and killed between 7 and 7:45 p.m on the 29th of November 2010. Police have no one in custody and are asking anyone with information to come forward. “The most important thing is to find out what happened to this young man and who did this,” he said.
“We want people to know this is very bad,” Margaret Taiwo, the victim’s aunt said. “People should not be afraid to call the police. It could have been their child. If he got help, he could be in the hospital right now, recovering. But he was left there. Only God knows”.
“I pray, whoever did this, will not rest.”
Busayo was very active on Nairaland (Nigerian Online forum) especially in the religious & sports sections. He went by Bawomolo, and he was a forum member that never had to be warned or banned by the moderators about any of his posts, as he only engaged in intelligent discussion.
I hope his killers are found soon, and given the justice they deserve. It’s so sad to see the life of another promising young person cut short…and I pray this doesn’t go the way of many gun crimes in the US, especially ones involving black men.
In the meantime lets pray for his soul, his family & his loved ones. A facebook group has been set up for him here.
